![]() If there is lightning, but the Thor Guard system does not activate - use the "30-30 Rule": Contests may not resume until the all-clear has sounded and the strobe light has shut off.Ģ.The strobe light will also turn off at this time. The all-clear signal is three 5-second blasts with 3-second intervals in between. When either of these warnings (15 second blast or flashing strobe) occur, all personnel (players, coaches, spectators and officials) must evaluate the field and seek safe shelter. In addition to the horn blast, a strobe light mounted on the unit will continue to flash until the all-clear signal has sounded. The system will sound a warning horn of one-15 second blast when there is a threat of lightning in the vicinity.Because of this, it is important that all MSL school personnel understand the Thor Guard warning system and take appropriate precautions when the system indicates impending severe weather. MSL Lightning GuidelinesĪll Mid-Suburban schools employ the Thor Guard lightning prediction and warning system as an aid in predicting severe weather situations. It applies to all out-of-doors district activities including but not limited to athletics, field trips, band practices/events, etc. The following policy is implemented to insure the safety of students, staff, and the public during times of Lightning. The best course of action for certified athletic trainers and managers is to take a WBGT reading at the place of the most severe conditions. For example, one part of a cross-country course may be hotter or more humid than other parts. Additionally, sometimes conditions will vary for different aspects of the same competition or practice. NOTE: While most attention will be given to outdoor sports in the fall and spring, indoor venues/facilities (gymnasiums, wrestling rooms, and swimming/diving facilities) that are not air conditioned should not be neglected for the purposes of this policy. Use Table 1 (see link below) with an on-site WBGT reading for appropriate exercise modifications during all indoor and outdoor athletic activities. Record the readings in writing and maintain the records within the athletics department. Minimum restrictions for athletic activity will be established thirty minutes prior to the start of activity. Thirty minutes prior to the start of an activity, and again 60 minutes after the start of the activity, WBGT or temperature and humidity readings will be taken at the site of the activity. State series tournament managers will make the decisions to suspend and resume activity in accordance with the IHSA guidelines using those devices or systems usually used at the state series venue/site. In conjunction with the IHSA officials and administration, the host school’s certified athletic trainer will make the decision to suspend and resume activity for practices and non-state series contests. If at any time you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, you should not continue your workout. These guidelines represent minimum standards that Mid-Suburban League member schools should follow for athletic competitions and practices when the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) is above 80 degrees Fahrenheit. **We encourage athletes to use their best judgement. It is recommended that you wait 30 minutes after the last audible thunder to resume outdoor activity. If lightning is present within 6 miles (30 seconds or less from flash to thunder) of a workout, the workout will be cancelled, rescheduled, or moved inside. Dress for the temperature and bring a dry change of clothes for after the workout. Bring a change of clothes and a jacket for after the workout. We will continue to meet in cold temperatures. High risk groups should use caution and move their workout inside when the AQI is over 100. Outdoor workouts will continue to be held until air quality at the location is above 150 AQI, in which case, the workout will be cancelled, rescheduled, or moved inside. Saturday morning workouts will always start at 8am so that the group is able to meet together for announcements and community building. When temperatures are over 100° F, outdoor workouts will be cancelled, rescheduled, or moved inside. When temperatures are over 90° F, athletes are encouraged to use caution, hydrate, and take things slow. If at any time you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, you should continue your workout at another time. We ask you to come prepared for the current elements and we encourage you to use your best judgement. This means you may be working out in all sorts of weather. At Runnin’ for Rhett, we work with our athletes year round, whether it’s an active training season or a “stay fit” session.
